Cohort 'looping'--popular in European primary schools--is the act of an instructor teaching a cohort of students over the course of several, continuous years. Think having the same teacher from first to fourth grade. One of the upsides is the deep understanding instructors have of their students. While cohort looping doesn't occur much in higher ed--what with the emphasis on content specialization--I want to argue, first, that McNair Programs are uniquely situated in the academy to provide such looping. Second, I want to demonstrate how the idea of looping has helped inform how we constructed a cohesive curriculum at the University of Rochester for our McNair Scholars.

"Many diverse Americans are “uncareered”. A contributing factor is that millions of high-school students graduate each year faced with two key choices - “getting a job” or “going to college”. Both decisions are made with limited to no awareness of the demands of the workforce for workers. This has resulted in many employers struggling to source skilled workers.

To address the issue, Kool Nerd Connect [KNC], a career-education company, has developed a number of industry-career courses to increase diverse students’ awareness of and interest in pursuing in-demand careers. As employers are struggling to find workers, KNC aims to have our diverse students become candidates for employment in in-demand careers, upon completion of their training or post-secondary program.

Our presentation will discuss how faculty members / educators can get their students to a space where they are thinking about careers. We will discuss some of our methodologies, workforce information on career pathways and employers’ feedback on new hires and their workforce challenges.

The presentation will prepare educators / faculty to have conversations with students on in-demand careers and the career pathways."

The first cohort of students began in July 2019. The program is a collaboration among the NJIT President’s Office through the Center for Pre-College Programs (CPCP) and the College of Science and Liberal Arts (CSLA), the Newark Board of
Education (Newark BOE), and the City of Newark. The workshop will include information on the partnership, data on the success of the program and a hands on activity.
