In this workshop, we will shed light on the pivotal role mentorship programs play in addressing the evolving challenges of the current educational climate. The focus will be on how mentorship in our upward bound program has enhanced student engagement and retention.

Cohort 'looping'--popular in European primary schools--is the act of an instructor teaching a cohort of students over the course of several, continuous years. Think having the same teacher from first to fourth grade. One of the upsides is the deep understanding instructors have of their students. While cohort looping doesn't occur much in higher ed--what with the emphasis on content specialization--I want to argue, first, that McNair Programs are uniquely situated in the academy to provide such looping. Second, I want to demonstrate how the idea of looping has helped inform how we constructed a cohesive curriculum at the University of Rochester for our McNair Scholars.
